How to fall asleep to fan noise
- Press play on Top Floor. It's a recording of a real heater fan, holding one even hum, with a slow Delta beat underneath. In Lissa it's sound that lasts the night, with a gentle alarm at the end of it.
- Keep it low. Turn it down until the sounds you're covering blend in. Sleep studies played noise at 40 to 55 decibels, quieter than a conversation.
- Sleep headphones, or a speaker. Sleep headphones, a soft headband or flat earbuds made for side sleepers, keep the hum with you and carry the beat, and whoever sleeps beside you gets a quiet room. A speaker fills the room instead.
- Start it when the lights go out, and give it a few nights before you judge it.
- Leave it on all night when something keeps waking you. Traffic, a partner who snores, footsteps at 1 a.m. In a small sleep-lab study, steady noise played over a night of loud, irregular sounds cut how often sleep was disturbed from 48 times an hour to 16, close to a quiet night, as the noise research tells it.
- Let it stop once you're asleep when your room is quiet. In a 2026 sleep-lab study, noise played all night at 50 decibels in a quiet room cost sleepers about 19 minutes of dream sleep. So when nothing wakes you, play the fan to drift off to.
Why a fan helps you sleep
A door, a car, a snore, a floorboard: the sounds that wake you are the sudden ones. A fan raises the floor of sound in the room, so they have less to stand out against, and more of them pass you by.
A fan also gives your mind nothing to follow. Voices, music and the TV keep you listening for what comes next. A hum is the same from one second to the next, so there is nothing to wait for.
And after years of the same sound at bedtime, the hum itself becomes the cue. It switches on, and your body starts getting ready for sleep. That's why a silent hotel room keeps a fan sleeper awake.
The research backs the first part most. Across 12 trials and 1,301 people, steady noise improved how people rated their sleep by 3.7 points on a 21-point scale, and the biggest gains were in hospital wards, where there was the most noise to cover. The sleep research has the trials.
Fan noise vs white noise
White noise is every pitch at once, at equal strength, which sounds like a bright hiss. A fan's hum is warmer: more low rumble, less hiss, and the texture of a real machine moving air. In the language of noise colors it sits closer to brown and pink than to white, which is why many people who find white noise harsh fall asleep to a fan without a second thought.
For sleep, the color matters less than the match. Where noise colors have been compared head to head, they've come out about the same, so choose the one that covers what wakes you and that you'd happily fall asleep to. The white noise guide plays white, pink and brown side by side, and explains what each color is.
A fan without the fan
The sound of a fan is the part that helps. The rest comes with it: a cold draught across the bed in January, a dusty blade, a motor running all night on the power bill, and a partner who would rather have the room still.
Top Floor is the hum without the machine: a real heater fan, recorded, with a slow Delta beat underneath. It plays in a hotel room, in a tent and on a night flight, and it's the same every night, wherever you are. Add ambient sounds over it, or let it play under your own playlist, and set each one's volume by ear.

Everything in Lissa for a night with the fan
The fan runs as long as your night does. Choose All Night and the hum holds from bedtime straight through to your alarm, ten hours or whatever your night is. Choose Fall Asleep and it settles you down for thirty minutes, then lets the room go quiet. Fall Asleep & Ease Awake does both: quiet through the night, and sound rising softly before the alarm.
A fan that goes where you go. The same hum in a hotel room, a tent or a window seat, with the bed warm and the window closed.
A gentle alarm at the end of it. A gentle Wake Alarm, and a morning soundscape can take over from there.
A dark screen by the bed. Night Light holds a soft red glow, then fades to black while the fan keeps playing, and StandBy turns your phone into a bedside clock.
The fan, mixed your way. Ambient sounds over it, rain or a far-off storm, or your own playlist alongside, each at its own volume.
Easy on your ears. Listening in headphones all night? Lissa shows how much listening your ears have had this week, so you know when to turn it down.

Before you start.
Why does the noise of a fan help me sleep?
A fan's hum raises the floor of sound in your room, so a door, a car or a snore has less to stand out against, and fewer of them wake you. It also gives your mind nothing to follow, and after enough nights the hum itself becomes a cue that it's time to sleep.
Is it good to sleep with fan noise every night?
Yes, at a low volume: quieter than a conversation, just loud enough for the room's sounds to blend in. If your room is quiet and nothing wakes you, let the fan play until you're asleep and then go quiet, since the sleep benefit comes from covering noise.
Is a fan white noise?
Close, but warmer. White noise is every pitch at equal strength, a bright hiss. A fan's hum has more low rumble and less hiss, so it sits nearer to brown or pink noise. Most people mean "a steady sound" when they say white noise, and a fan is the one they grew up with.
What is the best fan noise to fall asleep to?
The one that covers what wakes you and that you'd happily fall asleep to. A box fan or a heater fan has a deeper hum that covers footsteps and traffic; a small desk fan is lighter and brighter. Top Floor, above, is a real heater fan with a slow Delta beat underneath. Play it for a minute and see.
Does it play all night, with the screen dark?
Yes. Choose All Night and Top Floor plays from bedtime straight through to a gentle Wake Alarm, and Night Light fades your screen to black while it plays. Choose Fall Asleep instead when you only want sound until you're asleep.
Can I get fan noise for sleeping free?
Yes. Top Floor plays at the top of this page, and it's yours to keep free when you choose it as your free soundscape. Lissa is coming soon.
