How to fall asleep to green noise

  • Keep it low. Turn it down until the sounds you're covering blend in. Sleep studies played noise at 40 to 55 decibels, quieter than a conversation.
  • Speaker or headphones, your choice. A speaker fills the room; sleep headphones, a soft headband or flat earbuds made for side sleepers, keep the sound with you, so whoever sleeps beside you gets a quiet room.
  • Start it when the lights go out, and give it a few nights before you judge it.
  • Leave it on all night when something keeps waking you. Traffic, a snorer, footsteps at 1 a.m. In a small sleep-lab study, steady noise played over a night of loud, irregular sounds cut how often sleep was disturbed from 48 times an hour to 16, close to a quiet night.
  • Let it stop once you're asleep when your room is quiet. Overnight studies in quiet rooms haven't found that noise deepens sleep, so play it to drift off to.

What green noise is

Green noise is steady noise with most of its energy in the middle of the range. The deep rumble and the high hiss are turned down, so it sounds soft and rounded, like wind in the trees or a waterfall far off.

White and pink noise have standard definitions. Green doesn't: it's the name sleep apps and videos give to noise gathered in the middle, so each one sounds a little different. Lissa's Green is centered near 500 Hz and falls away on both sides. For white, pink, brown and the other colors, see the white noise guide.

Everything in Lissa for a night with Green

All night, or just until you drift off. Choose All Night and Green plays straight through to your alarm. Choose Fall Asleep for thirty minutes of sound that settles you down, then lets the room go quiet. Or choose Fall Asleep & Ease Awake: it settles you down, goes quiet through the night, and rises softly before your alarm.

A gentle way to wake up. Your Wake Alarm rings even with your phone on silent.

A cue that it's time for bed. A Wind Down reminder tells you when to start getting ready, and a chime opens every night, built on the conditioning research that began with Pavlov's dogs.

Green, mixed your way. Add ambient sounds over it, a slow Delta Range beat under it, or your own playlist alongside, and set each one's volume by ear.

Easy on your ears. Listening in headphones all night? Lissa shows how much listening your ears have had this week, so you know when to turn it down.

Lissa's Sleep | Wake Schedule editor: a 24-hour dial with a bedtime handle at 10:30 PM and a wake handle at 6:30 AM, the night's length of 8 hours in the centre.

Before you start.

Is it good to sleep with green noise?

It helps most when something keeps waking you, like voices through the wall, a TV next door or traffic. Green noise itself has barely been studied. The sleep studies used white and pink noise, and found it works best where there's something to cover. If you simply like a soft sound to fall asleep to, play it until you drift off.

Is it okay to listen to green noise all night?

Yes, at a low volume: quieter than a conversation, just loud enough for the room's sounds to blend in. If nothing is waking you, sound that plays until you're asleep and then goes quiet may suit you better.

Is green noise or brown noise better for sleep?

Research hasn't settled it, and where noise colors have been compared head to head, they've come out about the same. Brown is deeper and covers low sounds like traffic and a neighbor's bass. Green is lighter and rounder, for when brown feels too heavy and white too bright. Play each for a minute and keep the one you'd happily fall asleep to.

What is the best green noise frequency for sleep?

There isn't a standard one, because green noise has no fixed definition. Lissa's Green is centered near 500 Hz. Choose by ear, then get the volume right: low enough for the room to blend in.

What color noise is best for sleep?

The one that covers what wakes you and that you'd happily fall asleep to. White suits sharp, high sounds, brown a low rumble, and green and pink are softer choices when white feels too bright. The white noise guide plays them side by side.

Can I get green noise for sleep free?

Yes. Green plays at the top of this page, and it's yours to keep free when you choose it as your free soundscape. Lissa is coming soon. Join the waitlist and learn how to get Lissa Premium free at launch.
